tonight:

i ate dinner with my host family, but not my with roommate, who had already gone out on the town to tango the night away.  my host mother did not seem terribly pleased that i had not chosen to do the same.  this is not a new situation.

i excitedly used my newly acquired past-tense conjugation skills to explain that i waited in line for 2.5 hours after class today to get a sube card for the buses and subways here.  this was met with mild disbelief and general disinterest.  there goes that sense of accomplishment.

i learned that my host mother is suffering from a very bad toothache in one of her molars, but that most dentists are presently on vacation.  she has been chewing on cloves in an effort to ease the pain.  there seems to be quite a lot of pain, though, so i’m not sure how well that is working.

i announced that i would be going out with a couple of friends from class for ice cream and to see a movie at around midnight.  despite being very poorly communicated, this news was met with great enthusiasm from my audience.  i was even awarded a coupon by my host mother to the nearby theater.  it offers a pretty nice discount when you bring a friend with you to see a movie.

after dinner, well before 11, both of these friends backed out of aforementioned movie-going plans due to tiredness.

for some reason, walking some distance through an unfamiliar place at night and then sitting in a theater by myself didn’t seem terribly attractive.

tomorrow morning at breakfast, i am just going to attribute the inevitable look of complete disapproval from my host mother when she finds out about my night to her toothache. 

while i’m at it, all future looks of disapproval (of which there are bound to be many) shall be attributed thusly.

in case you were wondering, i did not get any cooler when i moved to a faraway city.
